The 2 day fast or the 5:2 diet came to prominence when when Dr Michael Mosley attracted our attention with BBC’s Horizon programme Eat, Fast, Live Longer, which saw him adopt a new way of fasting to lose a stone in five weeks.
Not only that, indications are that by following this regime your risk of cardiovascular disease (heart attacks, strokes) and contracting diabetes were greatly reduced.
The diet involves five days ‘on’ and two days ‘off’; that is, five days of eating normally and two days of cutting calorie intake to around 600 calories for men and 500 calories for women. Unlike conventional diets there are no restrictions on what you can generally eat (and drink) on your 5 days ‘on’.
Most diets fail because they require an incredible amount of self discipline and and unreasonable amount of self denial. The 2 day fast requires some self discipline, but let’s face it, if you can’t manage 2 days of moderate denial then no diet is going to work for you
